He kneels by Shawn's side, immediately dismissing the only position he can think of that would make symmetrical sense, well because, you just don't sit over someone unless you've been specifically invited.
Anyway, Gus figures he can still do a decent job this way. If he leans over Shawn and is careful with his balance.
He starts off low on Shawn's back, kneading the muscles and rubbing with the palms of his hands. Gus slides over Shawn's ribs lightly, no real need to work that area. He fans his fingers out across the shoulders though, pressing circles with his thumbs.
