Shawn is a self-appointed psychic who works for the Santa Barbara Police Department. He also runs his own private psychic investigation agency PSYCH.

The Psychic

Shawn has extraordinary, photographic recall ability and can recreate exact mental pictures out of his memory. He also shows features of an eidetic memory from time to time. He is highly skilled in reading a person's body language and spot even the smallest things the average eye would miss, like a hair on a sleeve (even if it is further away) or tiny scratches on a surface. He can put this information together fast as the wind. Whenever he spots something or figures something out however he disguises his discoveries as 'psychic visions'. Those fake visions are sometimes (embarrassingly) exaggerated, with Shawn throwing himself to the floor, against the wall, into fake spasms or pretending to be another, 'channeled' person or spirit.

Shawn's stream of consciousness is often very random. His father advises the young and the adult Shawn to focus on several occasions which seems to be his biggest problem. Shawn's mind appears to be a highly chaotic place and though he's able to spot a large amount of detailed information within seconds he sometimes seems to have difficulties to channel it into something linear so he can make the necessary logical connection.

Shawn seems to enjoy his work as a fake psychic very much which also shows in the fact that it's the first job he holds far longer than six months. Despite his carefree attitude he seems very dedicated to his current work. When he gets temporarily fired by an overworked Chief Vick during the Second Season we can see that he is totally crushed and starts working hard, trying everything to get back on track.

Shawn also has perfect aim and can handle a gun very well. It is unclear whether he possesses his own weapon, though.

Personality

In the pilot the young Shawn states that he is 'never going to grow up'. This is probably the most accurate description when looking at his carefree personality. To Shawn, everything in life is about fun.

Shawn seems to have a really, really hard time to take anything seriously – or rather handle it seriously. Almost every time he backs out with a side comment or by dragging the discussion into a different direction. Though on the surface he seems to have a very rich social life he doesn't seem to trust a lot of people and keeps them at a clear distance - for example he doesn't seem to have a problem to lie to absolutely everybody aside from Gus and his father about being a psychic.
